Lars Eidinger
Present Perfect. In Dialogue with the Collection
10-10-2026 - 28-02-2027
Actor and photographer Lars Eidinger has been capturing reality for over thirty years—first with his camera, then with his smartphone. With an eye for particulars, he conveys reality as it is. His wandering attention guides him to photograph the overlooked oddities of everyday life: a stone sculpture lacking hands, placed at the edge of a path; geometrically trimmed trees and hedges; passersby who seem to be doppelgängers. Eidinger’s photographed moments and scenes may appear incidental, but they convey immediate, undistorted truths about the human condition and cut deep into Western affluence—exposing raw existential emotions, needs, and rituals of people today as they truly are.
In Present Perfect, Kunsthalle Tübingen places Lars Eidinger’s photographs, videos, and selected groupings from his visual anthropological work in dialogue with artworks by other artists—all curated in close cooperation with the artist himself. This exhibition is the first to present Eidinger’s works alongside iconic pieces from the Kunsthalle, organized into thematic groups.
Works on permanent loan have expanded the institution’s permanent collection since the 1970s. Today, this spans works from the 1960s to the present day, as well as pieces by Georg Friedrich Zundel. The show thus traces points of contact across time, centering on existential themes: everyday life, remembering and forgetting, self-discovery, instinct, the need for self-expression, spatial exploration, consumption, and technologization, as seen in the works of Lars Eidinger as well as Yves Klein, Franz Erhard Walther, Ben Willikens, Sigmar Polke, and Katja Strunz. What results is an experience that invites visitors to create and develop ideas of their own.
