AUSSER HAUS

18-05-2019 - 10-11-2019

What is the specific cultural feature of the city of tübingen and its inhabitants? What characterises the region’s appearance? As artists, by their very nature, generally encounter their own culture, as well as other cultures, with the distant eye of a researcher, they are interesting partners in a dialogue about such questions.

They respond seismographically to their surroundings from an outsider’s standpoint and allow their observations and experiences to become manifest in their artistic works. Under the heading AUSSER HAUS, in 2019 the Kunsthalle Tübingen will extend its activities into the urban domain for the first time and build bridges to the local inhabitants. We have invited Bettina Pousttchi (born 1971) to be the first to travel through the ‘body of the city’ and respond to that social and cultural space site-specifically. Pousttchi lives in Berlin and is known for façade works which she has realized worldwide and which create a link to, and an awareness of, a specific place by means of a photographic transfer. In Tübingen, the highrise architecture opposite the Kunsthalle will, for the whole summer, become a temporary point of departure for her intervention. Her distinct but also persuasive intervention makes reference to the utopian aspect of this urban architecture, which is that of the greenery-rich satellite town of the 1960s. Tongue-in-cheek, she thinks the Manhattan-like highrise architecture of one of the residential towers through to the end. As a result of her radical questioning of the local situation, not only does she enable the history of the place to come alive, she also again raises the issue of a future worth living. Why not come by and let yourself be surprised!
