AFFECTIONATE STORYTELLING REGARDING CONTRADICTIONS OF LIFE
Zara Zandieh loves making films and standing behind the camera, especially for projects which show perspectives that are hardly seen, understood and simply need to be valued and recognized.
Coming from a queer-feminist post-colonial reflection she emphasizes contradictions and complexities which want to be considered simultaneously. She looks at them from a heart-centered and often poetic perspective. In her current experimental and essayistic work “The Trilogy of Happiness” she is connecting various views on happiness. Central questions of the piece are, What is the weight or importance of happiness? How do the protagonists with different gender expressions and narratives of migration relate to their own and or a collective happiness? In following these stories, she is interested in moving beyond narrations that reduce protagonists to their experiences of trauma and suffering. She strives to explore multi-dimensional and sincere experiences of escape, migration, multiple discriminations concerning race, class, sex and gender. Zara Zandieh invites you to her work by showing excerpts of different projects and speaking about their realization processes. Her films and video work have travelled, shown in exhibition places such as the HKW Berlin, Dokumenta 14 Athens, !f Independent Film Festival Istanbul, Hamburg International Queer Filmfest, and have been officially selected in the festivals DokLeipzig & achtung berlin.
Zara Zandieh works as an independent filmmaker and camerawoman in Berlin. She is currently working on her postgrad-film project at UdK Berlin (University of Arts Berlin) under the subervision of Prof. Nina Fischer. She studied cinematography at the film school “filmArche” in Berlin and completed her MA in Gender, Ethnic Studies and Sexualities at the University of East London in 2006.
