Women: Taboos of Stage and Stories
“The Taboo of calling women by their name and the manipulated presence of women within stories has a deep root in the Afghan society. Most of the texts which are written in the framework of Islam has also been interpreted by patriarchal system and a male dominant society. As we read and face female characters in the old and ancient texts they are reduced to animals and unworthy creatures. But also, the modern texts have not included women and women’s stories. Women who always have been in the core of discussions for prohibitions have so little role in the stories and stages. Women are obliged to live a hard life but are not allowed to tell their hard stories.
Among the religious and masculine interpretations of women and women’s life, which have been so popular for centuries; women’s commentary, interpretation, attitude and view of their own lives and their own stories is not acknowledged.
But most of all: Humans rights will never be acknowledged if not also women’s right is included. To us it seems that all society’s development to liberal democracies is driven by women’s hard work for equality. In Afghanistan, it’s obvious, but Europe has also a long way to go to achieve an equal society.
Therefore, women’s stories told public are going to effect and change women’s life. And therefore, it is important that stories of immigrant women will be told on stages in Europe as a presentation of others but also as a mirror to their own situation.” Monirah Hashemi
